The Phantom of the Opera

Tonight, the place to be seen was at the opening of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera at the Montecasino Teatro, Johannesburg...

Having played to more than 100 million people in 149 cities around the world, this full-scale production directed by Harold Prince is arguably the most popular musical of all time.

Undoubtedly, the show has everything from opulent costumes to a gorgeous set (including a marvellous chandelier which was brought to life) and of course Andrew Lloyd Webber's Famously Haunting Score, which is performed by a Marvellous South African cast including one of my favourite, Jonathan Roxmouth, who plays The Phantom

Roxmouth portrayed the Phantom as a totally intense and sensual being, desperate to be loved and acknowledged but too proud to be mocked or pitied. His performance was mesmerising.

Synopsis:
The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a disfigured musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera HouseMesmerised by the talents and beauty of a young soprano — Christine, The Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, The Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness and passions collide.

From the opening number to the final curtain, the cast had the entire audience spellbound with their performance. If you haven't bought tickets yet, you have until the 25th of March 2012 to see it at Montecasino.

My advice to you: "You don't want to Miss it!"
