Topsy Turvy

On friday night, I went to watch Jonathan Roxmouth in his one-man Show titled Topsy Turvy in the Studio Theatre at Montecasino. And, yet again, I was blown away by the immense Talent we have right here in South Africa ...

Although I had seen Jonathan's Unforgettable Performance as the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera earlier this year, I had never seen him perform a comedy. All I can say is he definitely took the Auditorium on a Humorous Ride through the Hysterical world of Gilbert and Sullivan.

If you (like me) have never heard of Gilbert and Sullivan, this is the perfect introduction to their work. As for the rest of the die-hard 'Gilbertians' out there, I spoke to a few folks familiar with their work and they loved it non-the-less.

The Show is multifaceted and deliciously witty and Roxmouth acts and sings both male and female roles from a variety of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas such as H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado to name a few.

But be Warned — this is no "traditional" recital; Satirical Lyrics were added to the mix, under the the able direction of Alan Swerdlow and you really needs to listen carefully so you don't miss any of the clever contemporary political references.

My favourite part of the show was the piano piece that was so effortlessly played and as a bonus, there is also a lesson in 'how to write' your own Gilbertian Operetta in the mix.

So, whether you know of Gilbert & Sullivan or not, this is a Brilliant must-see Performance for ALL, especially the fans of 'Musical Schizophrenia'.

1 Man. Over 15 characters. 8 Operettas.
